Parent Letter Regarding Bullying

Dear Parents/Guardian,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that we are experiencing an issue with bullying at our school. This problem is endemic throughout grade levels. Our faculty and staff have been addressing this topic consistently for several years. Last year we went as far as to bring the Nogales Police Department in to speak with students that had been accused of bullying more that one time during their tenure at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Students have been suspended and in two cases expelled. Yet the problem continues.

I have contacted the Nogales Police Department and asked them to come in to speak with our students; as of today (April 18, 2018) they have not given me a date. Additionally I am working with the office of Arizona Attorney General, Mark Brnovich; they will be bringing in an Anti-Bullying Program for 4th - 8th grades (parents will be invited to attend). We are planning on hosting this program in early May, date to be determined. Nogales Unified School District has invited our firth grade students to attend an assembly at the Nogales High School Auditorium on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. There will be a separate assembly for parents at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Nogales High School Auditorium.

Bullying is a serious issue that begins slowly with devastating consequences. According to The Adverse Childhood Experience Study, "A child who is bullied may experience negative mental health effects - there may be feelings of sadness, loneliness, and isolation. Physical health can also be affected - sleep disturbance, heart disease, eating disorders and other ailments can last into adulthood. Academic performance and participation may slump and some may retaliate with violence. Bullying is also a risk factor for youth suicide."

Please visit www.stopbullying.gov or refer to the handouts and fact sheets that were sent home and speak with your children about the harmful effects of bullying. It is also important to define bullying appropriately. We would like to work with you as a team to protect our children. We are here to serve, educate, minister, and protect your children.

God bless you,
Vanessa Rothstein
